The University of Alaska, Fairbanks’s Department of Social Work offers a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited degree to prepare students to work in communities throughout Alaska using real world learning model. Social work is a profession committed to assisting individuals, families, groups, organizations, communities and society as a whole in the improvement of the quality of life through the amelioration of social problems, equitable distribution of social resources, and client empowerment. The Department of Social Work offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in social work, both of which provide a solid liberal arts foundation. The major consists of 37 credit hours of concentrated studies in social work and concludes with an in-depth field placement experience with a community agency. Social work field education is the place where classroom learning and real world experience most explicitly come together. It is the heart of social work education.
